We’re looking at some very frigid cold again this morning, with all of our area down in the teens and single digits, feeling even colder thanks to wind chill.

Yesterday we broke the daily record for coldest high temperature in both Bluefield and Beckley. Beckley was four degrees below their previous record of 20 degrees, which was set in 1901. Bluefield was seven degrees below their record of 22 degrees, set in 1972.

A Cold Weather Advisory continues until 10 AM this morning for all counties in our area. The cold wind chills as low as 10 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Wind chill values and very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure. These cold wind chill values will start to come up after lunchtime, but they’ll still stay in the teens.

Wind chills will be down below zero again this morning.

This morning, we will see some leftover light snow / flurries. These will clear up by 9 or 10 AM, giving us increasing sunshine into the afternoon thanks to an area of high-pressure building in. High temps only top off in the mid 20s, so we still have to watch out for slick spots. Overnight tonight, lows will be back down in the teens, and we’ll see mostly clear skies, with calm winds. Tomorrow is looking mostly sunny thanks to high pressure, with highs in the low 40s.

A bit more snow early this morning, but the afternoon looks much drier.

As we head into the weekend, temperatures will be on their way up. Tomorrow and Sunday, we’re going to be in the 40s, but for the first half of next week, highs will be very spring like once again, sitting in the 50s.
