METEOROLOGY MONDAY: ALL ABOUT EARTH DAY
Where it came from, and how we can celebrate it every day of the year
BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (WVVA) - Earth Day was set in motion on April 22nd 1970, thanks to Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, who was inspired to create the holiday followed the surge in environmental activism in the 1960s. Earth Day is devoted to protection of all-things planet Earth, including our water, land, air, and wildlife. Celebrating earth day involves honoring and promoting environmental activism, which can include a number of things, such as helping combat climate change and pollution, to sustainable energy and wildlife conservation.
A few simple ways at home that you can pitch in to protect Mother Earth:
-Plant pollinator-friendly plants and native species
-Plant trees
-Pick up litter
-REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
-Conserve electricity by turning off lights when not in the room/using natural light
-Conserve water
-Walk, bike, or use public transportation to cut back on carbon dioxide/greenhouse gas emissions from vehicle traffic
-Support and visit local parks/green spaces
