CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A Virginia journalist is among the Americans coming home after a prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia.

U.S. Senator Tim Kaine had been among those pushing for the release of Russian-born Virginia resident Vladimir Kara-Murza, who was part of the deal that also included the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich.

But it comes at a price. One of the Russian prisoners returning to Moscow has been convicted of murder.

“It’s a tough pill to swallow when you have to release people back to Russia, who are so dangerous, to get law-abiding journalists and others returned to the United States,” Kaine said.

Kaine said he hopes this moment shows how committed the government is to getting these Americans home.

Particularly for those who are still waiting for their family members to return.
