ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - As students prepare to head back to school and families finalize their summer travel plans, health officials are sounding the alarm about a wave of COVID-19 infections sweeping across the United States.

“We are seeing a substantial infection wave in the United States, and even in some states as high as we saw last winter,” said Dr. Katelyn Jetelina, an epidemiologist and health scientist.

While hospitals are not overwhelmed, thanks to immunity built up over time, the virus is still a significant concern.

“If you’re feeling sick, it’s likely from COVID-19. And so when you are in a crowded boarding area, for example, or even on a plane before the wheels are up in the air, that air is stagnant. It mainly spreads through the air,” said Jetelina.

Health officials emphasize the importance of wearing masks, especially when traveling by plane or train, and staying up to date on COVID-19 and flu vaccinations, as both viruses continue to mutate.

“It’s really important, especially for those over 65, those with multiple chronic conditions, as well as the immunocompromised, to stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines to prevent severe disease and illness,” explained Jetelina.

Although the death rate from COVID-19 has dropped, approximately 600 Americans have lost their lives to the illness across the US this week. Health experts recommend getting the COVID-19 and flu vaccines together, as this can provide better protection against these mutating viruses.

“Numerous studies have shown that getting the COVID-19 vaccine and the flu vaccine at the same time is safe and effective,” said Jetelina.

As we head into the fall and winter months, it may be impossible to tell what sickness you have—it could be flu, COVID-19, RSV, or something else. Experts recommend getting tested and staying home whenever you feel sick.
