BLUE RIDGE, Va. (WDBJ) - Blue Ridge Baptist Church is a small congregation, but nonetheless, it celebrates a powerful message.

“We as a church are committed to obeying God, to learning and implementing his commandments in our lives and to being grateful for who we are as Black people,” said Blue Ridge Baptist Pastor Marcus Huffman.

It was a unique service Sunday, when members of the church gathered in song and prayer to celebrate Black History Month and 150 years of the beloved church.

“It’s so important for us to never forget where we come from,” said Pastor Huffman. “We look around at Blue Ridge and we see what God has done for our people, we can say that we’re blessed.”

The congregation was joined by Del. Sam Rasoul (D-Roanoke,) a special guest in the celebratory service and a Blue Ridge native. He shared his stories of growing up in the area and dedication to continue empowering Black history from the floors of the General Assembly.

“It’s about being proud of history, celebrating it and understanding when we advocate, we’re advocating for the common good of all people,” said the Delegate. “I’m grateful for Blue Ridge Baptist. We want to elevate and make sure we don’t forget all these lessons that are important, but also celebrating our rich history here in the region.”

But the celebrations didn’t end there. Del. Rasoul surprised the congregation with a Commending Resolution passed through the House, recognizing the 150 years put into Blue Ridge Baptist and its longevity serving the community.

“To be the pastor to receive that reward, it’s monumental. It’s priceless to me,” said Pastor Huffman. “He’s still paying attention to what little small Blue Ridge Baptist is doing.”
