FEMA approves nearly $5 million in assistance thus far

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (WVVA) - Across the 6 counties declared Major Disasters in West Virginia, FEMA has approved $4,860,709 for Individual Assistance.

McDowell County has seen the most registrations thus far with 876 individuals approved, followed by Mingo with 478, Mercer with 304 and Wyoming with 299. The two newest counties to be added to the disaster declaration, Logan and Wayne, have seen less that 100 registrations thus far.

Residents can visit one of the established Disaster Recovery Centers in McDowell, Mercer, Mingo and Wyoming Counties, head to DisasterAssistance.gov, call 1-800-621-3362, or use the FEMA mobile app.to apply for assistance.

FEMA may be able to help with temporary housing, repairs to your home and essential items. Essential items are listed as water, first aid, prescriptions, infant formula, breast feeding supplies, diapers, medical supplies, personal items, and fuel for transportation.

The funds may also be used for the repair of replacement of a vehicle, furniture and computers as well as supplies needed for moving or storage. Childcare and funeral expenses are also listed as situations that may qualify for funding. FEMA says funds may also be approved to repair privately owned roads and bridges.

Residents have until April, 28 to get their application for aid in.
