HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WVVA) - Following the departure of now former Head Coach Charles Huff, the Thundering Herd have had a tough time finding enough players to field a team.

That forced the program to decide to decline their invitation to participate in the Independence Bowl against Army on December 28th.

In a statement released on the school’s X account, they cited the decision as being based on what medical experts, coaches, and players see as the best decision for their health and well-being.

“At this moment, our football program’s participation numbers create a major concern for the health and safety of our current student-athletes to compete in a safe, viable manner.”

The team will now be replaced by Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl, as Marshall now looks forward to the future with new Head Coach Tony Gibson.
