BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (WVVA) - On this Sunday’s edition of In Focus our Taylor Hankins is spotlighting Black History in Bluefield, WV with the assistant to the city Gabrielle Ponder and represantative for the city’s Ward 1 Treyvon Simmons.

One topic discussed is the history of Bluefield’s East End and Northside neighborhoods.

“My grandfather he told this story until the day he died about he started working for Norfolk Southern, earning a little bit more money. He wanted to get a loan for a house. They didn’t check his credit or anything they just said, ‘Dont you think you should look on the Northside/East End part of town,?’ Back in those days you didn’t have many options like you do now. Its ‘we have to live over here’ and 30 years later we can’t get proper transportation? I would like to say the Grant Street Bridge was a catalyst for change. It’s definitely one of those things where the new projects we’re doing definitely gives us a voice and show people that ‘If we got this accomplished what else can we do?’,” said Simmons.
