BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (WVVA) - There is a lot more than spelling, grammar, and sentences structure on the lesson plan in English teacher Cindy Davis’ lesson plan.  Davis teaches 8th grade in Richlands Middle School in Tazewell County, Virginia.  The impact of her skill as an educator prompted two former students to nominate Davis, who says she weaves some character-building into the language arts curriculum she’s been teaching for decades. “Because they’re not always going to be in English class. It’s not always about that. But what skills you learn about yourself in any class you’re going to use in life. And no matter what life throws at you, if you know who you are, then you’re going to thrive wherever you’re planted,” said Davis.

The principal at Richlands Middle says Davis is a teacher who challenges her students to dig deep and tap into talent they don’t know they have.  Sabrina Holmes adds she’s witnessed those students rise to meet that challenge. “She cares and has a way of inspiring the students to see the best in themselves. She can motivate them and see things in them that they didn’t think was possible and then they believe they can do it. She can take an average student who never made good grades and make them believe that they are the best writer in the school and then they become one of the best writers in the school,” Holmes said, adding she’s an excellent choice to be named a WVVA Hometown Hero.
