TAZEWELL, Va. (WVVA) - Laura Patterson has been selected as February’s winner for WVVA and Cole Chevy’s Teacher Feature Contest.

Patterson teaches special education at Tazewell Primary School. Those around her say she goes above and beyond for her students.

“I try to give 100% to everyone of these kids and to the people that work with me so I try to do it everyday. These kids get left out a lot of things so I want them to feel as inclusive as possible. I want them to feel just like every other person,” said Patterson.

Patterson received a number of nomination letters calling for her to be selected as our newest winner. Those who know Patterson say she always puts her student’s needs before her own.

Patterson is credited with providing clothes and food to students who need it.

“I definitely want them to feel loved, safe, respected and then if we learn some academic things along the way then that’s a bonus,” said Patterson. “I’m willing to fight for these kids to make sure that they get everything that they need and that they’re accepted in every way.”

Patterson say she can’t take all the credit for the work she does for her students in the classroom. She says those around her make it all possible.

“This is definitely my passion. We do have hard days but its those hard days that we push through and have those aha moments and that’s what makes it worth it,” said Patterson.
